Located in one of the island’s most authentic coastal enclaves, El Cotillo, Soft Bauhaus balances the serenity of its surroundings with pieces that speak for themselves. Inspired by the Bauhaus philosophy, the project seeks to unite art, craft, and technology-working alongside local artisans and contemporary artists such as photographer Tim Buiting. The result is a functional and serene space, where every corner reflects the understated soul of the pure materials used throughout. A subtle dialogue between form and function, between the calm of the landscape and the precision of design.
Layout.
The complexity of the project lay primarily in its initial spatial composition. An apartment with an irregular L-shaped plan and double-height ceilings on the first floor blurred the sense of functionality. A geometry as singular as it was challenging-yet playful when it came to zoning and distribution.
After exploring several options, the final layout was designed for a young, dynamic audience: people working remotely who wish to enjoy the island’s natural richness, to work under its unmistakable light, and to unwind at night in the most intimate part of the space.
Aesthetic.
Instead of resorting to the overused aesthetics common in the area, the project sought to embrace a fresher, more contemporary identity. Inspired by Bauhaus principles, it enhances functionality and minimalism through the use of honest, modern materials such as steel, glass, concrete, and wood. Every choice responds to a clear idea: to create a simple, resilient, and accessible space-where beauty arises from proportion and coherence.
Pieces with character.
The philosophy of the project comes to life through the pieces that inhabit it. Objects with history and character, such as the Cesca chair designed by Marcel Breuer or the iconic Chandigarh chair by Pierre Jeanneret, evoke an era when functionalism defined modern living. These are complemented by contemporary elements like the dining table by VICAL, appliances by CREATE, and photographic works by Tim Buiting for HKLiving. Together, they shape a cohesive, expressive, and vibrant ensemble-an interior that feels distinct, youthful, and full of energy.
